It is refreshing to see today’s producers and directors experimenting with films with women in lead roles. In the recent past Gulab Gang was one film and now this. Based or more appropriately inspired by a real life lady cop the movie deals with a silent but deadly and disturbing truth of child abduction and sex trafficking. Though the story is predictable but it is nicely put together. The treatment given by Pradeep Sarkar as understating and not very glorifying of the lead actor which usually is the case in Bollywood cinema.
I have always maintained the stand that Rani Mukherjee is one of the most talented actors of our generation and she has proved it time and again but as scotch whiskey she is maturing with her age and that is very good and refreshing to see. In Dhobi Gath she has a small but powerful roll and though the movie failed to connect with the audience she for sure did. She was also very good in Talaash. Tahir was fresh and did a fare job though a long was to go for him.
The overall treatment of the film and subtleness of Rani’s acting made sure the story of the film remains intact and there is no unnecessary distractions. Even the songs are more background scores. The only complain I have again this movie is its ending which could have done without the melodrama and the overtone but then this is a Bollywood movie right?
Go watch it as it is worth your time and attention especially the subject.
