My top 10 movies of 2014

Hope you are all enjoying the year-end holidays, had a great Christmas eve and preparing for a gala New Year party. I will take this opportunity to reflect back at 2014 and bring to you the best films I liked watching. These are my top 10 movies of the year 2014. They are the once I liked and am recommending to you in no particular order if you choose to believe that way.

1. Boyhood

Written and directed by Richard Linklater famed for Before Sunset and Before Sunrise both starring Ethan Hawke who also star in this movie by the way, is a master piece. Though the story could have been better written, you cannot undermine the efforts which have been put to make this movie spanning 12 year. This is also the only movie till date to get a 5 star rating on my blog. One of the nominations for the Oscars this year in various categories.

2. The Grand Budapest Hotel

This movie is hilarious but at the same time dark. It is a comic but at the same time artistic. This is by far one of the best I have seen of Ralph Fiennes after the English Patient. I am sure this will land him another Oscar nomination at least of not a win. I just could not stop laughing.

3. Gone Girl

This has been a surprise package of this year for me and thus it features so high up in my list. I went in search of another Ben Affleck film but returned with another find called Rosemund Pike. The story suited her style of acting and image perfectly and boy she was amazing. The ex bond girl has come of age for sure and deserves a place in the top 5 of the Oscars. This is a year of dark movies and this is another one with a different flavour.

4. Nightcrawler

If you like dark, look no further as this is as dark as it gets. I have watched Jake Gyllenhaal but this has to be his best so far. The movie is a thrilling experience and you will be surely glued to your seats. Jake for sure gets my pick for the Oscar nominations along with the movie. Director Dan Gilroy has done a commendable job here to keep the story as raw and life-like as possible.

5. The Theory of Everything

This biopic of Physicist Stephen Hawking written by his wife Jane Hawking is a must watch if you want to experience human endurance and will power. The best thing about this movie has to be its casting of Eddie Redmayne as Dr. Stephen Hawking. I have not seen much of him but I am sure after this movie I will.

6. Haider

Haider is the first Bollywood Hindi movie to feature in my list. Vishal Bharadwaj’s adaptation of Hamlet written by William Shakespeare is by far his best work of the three adaptations Maqbool (Macbeth) and Omkara (Othello). Shahid Kapoor also sines under Vishal’s leadership. This is the best movie by far in Bollywood this year.

7. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This is one of the best franchise I have seen in my movie watching career. Every time I see a Planet of Ape movie it amazes me with the endless possibilities in this universe and this movie does not disappoint. Another high point of this movie apart from its CG is Andy Serkis, he bring Caesar to life and you end up long for him more and more.

8. The fault in our stars

I am not a book reader but people have said that the movie is as good as the book and it is a rare occasion as the book in most cases turns out to be better. This is also because people have their own perception and visualization when they read a book and the directors visualization may or may not come up to their expectation. That means young director Josh Boone has done a fabulous job here. Coming together for the second time with co-star Ansel Elgort after Divergent Shailene Woodley also shined in this movie.

9. Queen

This showcases the best work by Kangana Ranaut in her career so far. After producing films like Dev D and Udaan, this is producer  Vikas Bahl’s directorial debut and he has a done a great job. He has also written this film and it will always remain one of his best work.

10. Mary Kom

This is a difficult number to pick as it is the last to make the cut. There were many well deserved contenders like X Men days of the future past, Chef, Divergent, Begin Again, The Hundred-Foot Journey, Million Dollar Arm but I have to give it to Mary Kom, . I have to give it to Mary Kom. Though Priyanka Chopra is the star in this movie in real life it is Mary Kom the best boxer India has every produced.
