Movie Review – Rangoon***

Rangoon is a hit and miss story for me. Set in pre Independence era on the Burma border where Indian National Army was gaining ground against the British with the help of Japan. It is the story of an Actress, her studio promoter and a solider. Taking about the hits first is the acting by all the lead actors. Kangana Ranaut has come leaps and bounces from her Gangster days and proves again that she is one of the best in the industry today. Saif Ali Khan again gives his best working with Vishal Bhardwaj &Shahid Kapoor is as good as he can get. Vishal Bhardwaj also gets his camera talking and some of the scenes are visually stunning.

Now my list of complain starts with the story. It seems that we have seen it all and been there. There is nothing new and though there are many things to like, they are not cohesive. Things get repetitive and stretched to the extent that it makes the film looses its connect. You are never really invested in the story and in the end the film shifts from realism to fantasy. The worst part of the film is its lack of a strong antagonist. They all seem cartoony and induce laughter more than fear and tension.

Bhardwaj also should do something about the way treats his songs as they are getting more and more similar. This is defiantly not his best creation and I am sure he can make good movies even without adopting Shakespeare. I would have given it 2 1/2 stars but I am giving it 1/2 more just for acting.
