HBO is setting new standards. Of course you must be waiting for Game of Throne’s new season but this short 7 episode mini series based on a book of the same title is sure to keep you entertained. When you have a star cast including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and I can go on and on, you are sure of one thing, you will have lots of fun and will be highly entertained. There is a murder which has shocked a high society suburb with luxurious houses facing the sea. Nothings seem to be the same after one Jane Chapman moves in. A perfect places where everyone seem to have a life with no compromise, there is a darkness deep down.

Initially when you start watching the season your concentration is more towards the murder, who is murdered and of course who is the culprit. Soon you will realize that this murder is just a under tone and a link between what it happening. It is the complex lives of the central characters which takes center stage. How these people having such wonderful life on the surface live a mirage built on lies. The acting is A grade all across but my stand out actor was Reese Witherspoon. She could go from being a person loving life, highly talkative and socializing person to a person having secret deep down, lonely and battered in a jiffy.

Another highlight of the series is the way it is shot and stylized. Full marks to Jean Marc Vallee director of Oscar winning and nominated movies like Dallas Buyers Club & Wild. Also the music is good. I have always like series with high production value and this is one show which will have full marks in the department. Sure there are compromises as this is a TV series and will not have a movie like budget especially considering the scope of the story but these are just nit pickings. I am excited and quite sure it will make some noise at the Emmy’s and Golden Globe.

Watch it on Hotstar. It is quite an slow burning entertainer.

P.S. not a family outing so ask your kids to play in the other room. đŸ™‚
